Chemistry for Non-chemists (4 hours) Tuesday, April 8 8 am - noon. Trainer: Brennan Kessenich, Metro (Portland)
This training is designed for hazardous waste professionals who want to learn how fundamental chemistry principles apply to their work. We will review the basics of the periodic table, the pH scale, solubility, organic chemistry, and reactivity, with a focus on how these topics show up in household hazardous waste facilities. No prior chemistry knowledge is required. 
Disaster Preparedness and Resilience for HHW and Solid Waste Operations (2 hours) Tuesday, April 8, 1 -3 pm. Trainer: Jim Quinn, Metro (Portland) 
In recent years there has been a noticeable increase in climate driven disasters, including wildfire, extreme heat and cold, floods, etc., and unfortunately, we are likely to see more and more of this. Other risks are on the increase as well, such as cybercrime. This presentation will look at the concept of resilience and ways to increase resilience in HHW and solid waste operations through all types of disasters and disruptions. It will provide usable information about continuity of operations planning, disaster debris management, providing HHW services following a disaster, and safe operations in the face of extreme heat, wildfire smoke, and extreme winter weather. 
Understanding Communication Styles to Enhance Team Effectiveness (2 hours) Tuesday, April 8, 3-5 pm. Trainer: Ray Carveth, Purple Ink
Have you ever wondered about your communication style and how others may view it? Would you like to find out? Would you like a few tips on quickly adapting your style to make it easier to communicate with someone? Have you ever talked with someone for a few minutes and felt like kindred spirits? There is a reason for that. Has anyone said to you  "It's not what you said, it's how you said it." Have you ever said that to someone and if so, was it said with a negative tone? Would you like a few tips on how to avoid those types of communications? For over 30 years Ray has helped numerous organizations, non-profits, government, corporate boards of directors, businesses, and college students use a quick and easy way to assess someone's communication pattern. Ray will provide an assessment sheet, real-life examples, and a spreadsheet of the key items one can expect from each communication style. It's taught with humor and fun, come join us.
